Brno, with its 380,000 inhabitants, is the second largest city in the Czech Republic and one of the 100 largest cities in the European Union. It is an administrative and cultural center of the South Moravian Region, one of the warmest regions of the Czech Republic.
In 2019, Brno ranked as the sixth best student city according to the British company Quacquarelli Symonds. There are six public universities in Brno, the biggest of them Masaryk University, which is also the second biggest in the Czech Republic, with approximately 30,000 students enrolled.
Brno’s popularity among students can be, among other things, attributed to the fact that Brno is very easy to navigate. Most of the city’s attractions are within a 15-minute walk from the city center, and the city has an innovative public transport system that operates non-stop: The city transport buses leave the main train station every hour on special night routes. Especially Erasmus students praise the safety they feel when studying in Brno, which comes as no surprise as the Czech Republic is one of the safest countries in the world and currently ranks ninth on the Global Peace Index.
Brno is a city rich with culture, offering a wide range of possibilities, from visiting the Brno Exhibition Centre, one of the largest exhibition centers in Europe, to visiting one of its many theatres. Theatre enthusiasts can choose between the alternative Goose on a String Theatre, classic Janáček Theatre, Mahen Theatre, and many more. Worth mentioning is also Ignis Brunensis, an international fireworks competition.
The national currency of the Czech Republic is the Czech koruna, also known as the Czech crown (CZK). It is possible to exchange foreign currency at these locations. Or use one of the many ATM’s located in the city center.
