Přednáška dr. Weroniky Łaszkiewicz “From Stereotypes to Sovereignty: Native Americans in Speculative Fiction.”

The aim of this lecture is to demonstrate how Native American peoples and cultures have been subjected to racial stereotyping in various genres of speculative fiction. The lecture will first address the variety of Native stereotypes present in the Euro-American imagination and evaluate their significance through a critical lens offered by selected Native American scholars. The lecture will then examine how the stereotypes in question are still recycled and reinforced by different genres of speculative fiction (e.g., horror, fantasy, and science fiction) and argue why it is vital to eliminate them from modern discourses and the public imagination.

Weronika Łaszkiewicz, PhD, is assistant professor at the University of Białystok (Poland). She has written a number of articles on different aspects of Euro-American fantasy fiction. She is the author of Fantasy Literature and Christianity (2018) and Exploring Fantasy Literature (2019). Together with Tereza Dědinová, PhD and Sylwia Borowska-Szerszun, PhD she has recently coedited Images of the Anthropocene in Speculative Fiction (2021).
